"A child's exposure to technology should never be predicated on an ability to pay for it."Do you know a disadvantaged kid in the Austin area that would benefit from having a computer? Email us at icanhelp@fixedbylinux.com. We have been rebuilding old computers and bringing them up to today's technoology standards for three years so the computers we give these kids will last them a good long while. Tell us about an disadvantaged child who would not normally have the chance of having a computer and if they are deemed as eligible, we will build them one free of charge.
It's what we do.

The HeliOS Project is asked to speak before The Austin Telecommunications Commission on 2-11-09. The Commission is sought out and makes recommendations to the Austin City Council concerning technical matters that affect the city.
You can download the video of that presentation here (.avi) or here (.mpg).
Don't lock a child's future away. Give them an equal chance to learn and compete.

The HeliOS Project - An Austin Texas-based organization comprised of a Board of Directors and volunteers. We have no paid staff and all transportation costs associated with delivering, gathering or picking up our donated machines or parts is provided by volunteers and your donations.
What would eventually evolve into The HeliOS Project began in 2004 with three guys gathered around a dining room table. Ken Starks and two other military veterans began refurbishing cast-off computers and giving them to kids who didn't have one. It became evident in short time that the number of kids without home access to an up-to-date computer was unacceptable.
Our goal was to do our best to reduce that number. This effort has been supported by a relative handful of people since it began. Most of them are Linux users and enthusiasts, some are simply people that believe in what we are doing. In 2007, we built and placed 228 computers with Central Texas children that needed them. In 2008, we have exceeded 325.
That number doesn't seem particularly overwhelming until you discover that for 2008, one man did each and every one of them by himself.
Built, installed and supported.
Our warmest thanks go out to those who have become part of what we do. Their belief in this project has been all that's sustained us from time to time and without them, it would have been a short-lived effort.
Partnering with Software in the Public Interest in 2009, The HeliOS Project can now go forward with the confidence and the passion that saw its inception. Your participation, regardless of what that participation is, holds us together. Our association with SPI gives us the ability to give you Letters of Receipt for your tax deductions, as they act as our Non Profit (501) designator.
With 5 Directors, the work flow has been divided up and everyone can contribute to their strength. The Directors of The HeliOS Project were chosen carefully.
This is a much larger dining room table now and there is room for many more to gather around it, whether physically or in metaphor. Your presence and support make this happen. From the Directors, volunteers and people that donate their resources and money to us, thank you for being part of what we do.
We have a new section of our website. It is our SuperNova Club. We are proud to list the names and organizations that help us accomplish our goals. Again...we couldn't do it without you. Click the title link above to see who's worked to make a difference in our community.
